Faculty Recognition

Faculty Recognition

At the University of Richmond, we celebrate the excellence of our world-class teacher-scholars whose work contributes to a vibrant intellectual community — both in the classroom and across the broader academic and civic life of the University.

Colloquy: Aug. 20, 2025

An annual event to mark the official start of the academic year, Colloquy provides an opportunity for faculty and staff to come together to recognize Distinguished Educator and Distinguished Scholarship Award recipients, and the installation of newly appointed endowed position holders.

University Awards

To honor outstanding contributions, we annually present three University-wide faculty awards that recognize exceptional achievement: the Distinguished Educator Award, the Distinguished Scholarship Award, and the Distinguished Faculty Service Award. These honors are conferred publicly at Colloquy, the ceremonial opening of the academic year, and reflect the University’s deep commitment to recognizing faculty excellence in teaching, research, and service.

Awardees are selected by a cross-school panel of faculty reviewers following a nomination process open to the campus community. Nomination guidelines, as well as a list of past recipients, are announced each fall.

National & State Awards

Richmond faculty are also frequently recognized beyond the University for their achievements in research, teaching, and public engagement. Recent external honors have included awards such as the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) Outstanding Faculty Award, the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation Award for excellence in chemistry education and research, and the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC) H. Hiter Harris III Excellence in Instructional Leadership Award.

Here are a few stories about our recent awards.

Endowed Chairs, Professorships, and Fellowships

Many faculty hold prestigious endowed chairs, professorships, and fellowships made possible by the generosity of alumni and donors, which further support their scholarly work and leadership across disciplines.
