Local & Global Engagement

Civic and global engagement, humanistic inquiry, innovative thinking, arts and culture, and sustainability are foundational to a liberal arts education at the University of Richmond. Connecting learning in and out of the classroom to the physical, cultural, civic, and natural world — in Richmond, the nation, and around the globe — enhances the Spider experience and prepares each student for a life of purpose, meaning, and joy.

Engaging with our region

Community engagement is a strategic priority at the University of Richmond. Students, faculty, and staff engage with organizations across our region and beyond through volunteering, community-based learning and research, summer civic fellowships, and more.

The Bonner Center for Civic Engagement supports faculty seeking to create and fund community-based learning classes and pursue community-engaged research.

Engaging with our world

The Office of International Education helps all Spiders become global citizens in an increasingly complicated and interconnected world. Its dean and staff are advocates and advisors who help advance global connectivity for students, faculty and staff.

Sustainability at Richmond

At the University of Richmond, sustainability means creating environmental, social, and economic conditions that foster health and well-being for people and the natural world in this generation and generations to come.

In collaboration with campus partners, the Office for Sustainability provides leadership and guidance as the University integrates sustainability into short and long-range planning efforts.

The Arts at Richmond

At the University of Richmond, the arts are for everyone — on stage, backstage, in studios, in the museums, classrooms, and throughout our inspiring venues. Faculty mentorship encourages creative thinking, authentic expression, and thoughtful interpretation — fostering belonging and, community.

The Humanities at Richmond

The humanities at Richmond are less about a set of majors or departments than a cluster of practices that shape how we perceive, make sense of, and respond to an ever-changing world. The University of Richmond Humanities Center offers a range of public events and intensive programs that bring our community together, whatever our majors or departments.
