English Language Learning

English Language Learning at the Weinstein Learning Center provides curricular and co-curricular support for international students, exchange students, and students for whom English is not their first language. Support includes courses, one-on-one or group consultations, and resources that enhance students’ academic and intercultural growth. In addition to student support, English Language Learning provides training and resources for faculty and staff regarding effective engagement with multi-lingual students. Scrabble Tournament 

The highest scoring scrabble word ever played was beauxite (an archaic but valid spelling of the aluminum ore bauxite). Set down by then undergraduate Toh Weibin, this word earned the young player a monstrous 275 points and a World Record Title. Undergraduates of UR, can you set the next World Record? Find out at the English Language and Intercultural Learning center’s first ever Scrabble Tournament on Friday, November 22nd in THC 305.  

Test your skills and enter for the chance to win a FREE swag item from the UR Spider Shop. Tournament runs from 5:30-8:00 PM.

About the Director

Leslie Bohon, Ph.D

Leslie Bohon, Ph.D, has broad experience of over 30 years in international education at the university and secondary levels as an ESL/EFL professional, cross-cultural researcher, administrator, teacher and professor, program start-up and developer, curriculum developer, and professional development trainer. She currently serves as Director of English Language Learning at the Weinstein Learning Center. Her research interests are international student development; language, cultural, and academic needs of international students; intercultural competence, and intercultural learning. Dr. Bohon’s Ph.D. is in Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership with a focus on international education from the College of William & Mary. She completed her B.A. and M.Ed. degrees at the University of Virginia in French language and Second Language Curriculum and Instruction.
