The Distinguished Educator Awards have been honoring excellence in teaching at the University of Richmond since 1975 when the Cabell Foundation made a grant to the University to be used to attract and retain outstanding faculty and promote excellence in teaching.

The process for selection includes wide input from current and former students as well as from faculty and administrators. Please review the guidelines for selection for more information on nomination and selection.

Over the years, thoughtful and generous benefactors, wisely perceiving the critical importance to the University of Richmond of a strong faculty, have endowed chairs, professorships, and fellowships.  These endowed funds offer a special way to recognize and pay tribute to distinguished faculty members who set the University's intellectual tone through their teaching, scholarship and research.  Endowed chairs, professorships and fellowships serve as living memorials to donors and others whom the donor has wished to honor.

The Outstanding Faculty Awards are the Commonwealth's highest honor for faculty at Virginia's colleges and universities. This prestigious award recognizes the finest among Virginia's college faculty for their demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and public service.

Each recipient receives a cash award appropriated by the General Assembly and a specially designed commemorative plaque from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), which administers the Outstanding Faculty Award program.
