Committees and Special Task Forces - Committee on Faculty Credentials
This is an administrative committee and is not a committee of the University Faculty. It was established by the Provost in September of 2005.
Charge:
The Committee on Faculty Credentials will monitor the credentials of faculty to see that they are qualified according to SACS expectations to teach courses for academic credit. In practice this monitoring will be done by maintaining a database of faculty, their credentials, and their teaching assignments. The committee will set requirements for the justifications for faculty whose credentials do not meet those prescribed by SACS, yet whose experiences and recognition outside academe qualify them to teach certain courses for credit. The committee will also review the credentials of those who have oversight of academic programs.
Process Comments:
- The chair of the committee will review all special justifications and work with the school to see that appropriate documentation is on file supporting qualifications. The chair may bring special situations to the attention of the entire committee from time to time so that a policy decision can be made.
- The chair will work with each school's representative to see that credential files are maintained and that the database information is current.
- The committee has the final decision on any questions concerning SACS qualifications of faculty to teach courses for credit at Richmond or courses that are transcripted as Richmond courses even though taught elsewhere. Questions should be referred to the chair.
Membership:
There will be a representative from each school's dean's office. These individuals will be ones who are involved in hiring and are familiar with SACS credentialing requirements. The committee will be chaired by the associate provost. All members are appointed by the provost.
